A must do on your bucket list: the Matterhorn in Zermatt

Zermatt was one of the destinations where I absolutely wanted to go. It is located also in the German speaking section of the canton of Valais. It is famous for its ski resort in the Swiss Alps, and of course for the Matterhorn (4478 m/ 14692 ft). It is surrounded almost completely by high mountains.

As Zermatt is car-free, we decided not to stay in Zermatt, but in a little village near Zermatt. The name of this village was Täsch. It is located about 5 km/ 3,1 miles north of Zermatt. To get to Zermatt from Täsch, we could either ask the hotel owner to drive us (what he did) or we could take the Glacier Express, which is a special train that transports people from one village to another in this region.

The Matterhorn

The Matterhorn was an ABSOLUTE must-do in Switzerland! For those of you who hadn’t heard of it before, it is a mountain of 4.478 meters high, which is located on the border between Switzerland and Italy. Its first climb was made in 1865 by E. Whymper. But this ended already tragically because 4 of its members died while falling in the descent. Since the 19th century, it has become THE landmark of Switzerland, but also of the Alps.

When we arrived in Zermatt, I was so exited to see the Matterhorn. How could it otherwise be, the Matterhorn was partly covered with clouds. I was immediately disappointed, but since I’m almost at all times a lucky girl, and so the clouds disappeared and I had my entirely view on the beautiful and stunning Matterhorn. A dream has become true!

Klein Matterhorn

When we were still in Luxembourg, I read something about a cable car that you can take to get up on a mountain named „Klein Matterhorn“, which means little Matterhorn. So we asked the owner of the hotel for tickets.

Arriving in Zermatt, first, we walked through whole Zermatt to get to the station where the cable car started. As we thought that it could be cold on the mountain, we took our winter coats with us, which was really annoying in Zermatt, because there where like 20 degrees.

To get up on the little Matterhorn, you have to take 3 different cable cars. After the first two, how could it otherwise be, the guard told us that it wouldn’t make any sense to get up there, because this would be the last one that returns for this day. Otherwise we could come back with the crew. So we had to chose between either getting up with this cable car an immediatly returning, or getting up, and staying there for like 15 minutes, and then return with the crew. We chose for the first option. I was so sad, because up on the mountain you could go visiting a glacier, and you have a really good view on the Matterhorn. Actually, it was so stupid to buy those tickets to get up on this mountain, because it was already after 3pm in the noon, and this is really late to get up on a mountain. So, I can recommend you again, if you want to get up on a mountain, do it in the morning, because there you can be sure that you have enough time to visit everything up there. Another time where we spent a lot of money to stay in a cable car!

On the way up and down, we took a few pictures, because the whole view of the mountains and glacier was so amazing. And we saw also free Alpine ibex, also known as steinbok.

Zermatt

We also wanted to visit the gorner gorge (in German Gornerschlucht), which was already closed, as it was already after 6 pm. Anyways, it was really fun, and we saw a few squirrels.
