Alta – the city of Northern Lights

Everyone should have the chance to visit one of the most magical phenomena on earth, the Northern Lights. I was incredibly happy to observe them for a second time in my life in Alta, which is also known as the city of Northern Lights.

According to Visit Alta, Alta is a really good choice for visitors who want to observe the magic of the Aurora Borealis. It has a really stable climate with temperatures below -30°C in winter, which is perfect for experiencing the Northern Lights because the cold temperature makes the clouds disappear. As Alta is located in the Alta Fjord, it is a very magical place to observe the dancing Northern Lights over the water.

If you want to know how the phenomena works exactly, have a look at Northern Lights in Iceland, where I tried to explain this magical experience. It is really difficult to explain and also to understand this phenomena, but even if you don’t understand it, be sure to go hunting one day for those lights. I could observe them already once in Iceland and twice in Norway.

To conclude I cannot wait to experience the Northern Lights again and feel the magic of them. I am very happy that I could observe them now for a few times, but it will never be enough because the lights are not always the same. Immediately when you discover them, you are magnetized. It is a really magical light show up in the sky with constantly new emergence and formations that you don’t know where to look first.

Concerning the photos, you should absolutely have a tripod. Without tripod it’s impossible to shoot pictures of the Northern Lights. Furthermore, you need to have a reflex camera because you have to play with the brightness etc.
