Merry Christmas, Aachen!

One of the most beautiful things to do at the Christmastime is visiting many Christmas markets. I could go to 100 Christmas markets and still have the desire to visit thousand more. Since I can remember, I always loved to visit Christmas markets, but I think this comes with the Western Europe traditions.

I love especially the German Christmas markets. If you’ve been to one, you know why! The one in Aachen is so charming and full of Christmas feelings. Even if it had rained sometimes, what is really typical in Aachen, it still gives you the desire to stay there.

Basically, you have one big Christmas market in Aachen, but it is split on different places, which makes it easier to get through the crowds of people. The most popular ones are located on the Aachener Markt and the Katschhof.

The Aachener Christmas market is one of the biggest ones in Germany with an attendance of 1,5 millions of people. The specialities of Aachen and also of their Christmas market are the Aachener Printen, gingerbread and the so called dome liqueur.

What I love about the German Christmas markets are the beautiful and handmade things that you can buy and also try. You don’t only get the American kitsch, but old traditional Christmas stuff. This, in combination with the smell of mulled wine, cinnamon and Christmas music, gives you the perfect Christmas feelings.

For me, I think everyone should have at least visited one German Christmas market in their life. Especially those of us, who celebrate Christmas in summer. I can’t imagine how to get in a Christmas mood, without having our cold time with mulled wine at the Christmas markets.
