Mullerthal Trail Seasoning Opening: from Beaufort to Medernach

Today was the big day of the Mullerthal Trail Seasoning Opening organised by the Office Régional du Tourisme Région Mullerthal – Petite Suisse Luxembourgeoise. From the moment that I heard about this hike, I was looking for the date. When I was a kid, I used to be very often in the Mullerthal, but in the last few years, I didn’t think about going there. This changed, because I now also see Luxembourg with the eyes of a traveler.

First, you have to chose between three different routes. The first route was from Larochette to Medernach (6,3 km), the second route was from Beaufort to Medernach (9,2 km) and the third one was from Meysembourg to Medernach (11,4 km). We opt for the second one, because the first was not long enough and we though that the third one would be too much, as it was our first hike for 2016. So we had to be at 9 am at the parking of the Castle of Beaufort.

It all started with a welcome speech of the guides and very soon we started our way. It started with a small walk through Beaufort itself, but very soon, we entered the forest. Our first stop was at the Klingelbour, an old where people used to wash their things.

Then the hike continued through the forest. On the one side, we had the beautifully and typically stone formations of the Mullerthal and on the other side the river. As it had rained almost the whole week, the ground was really muddy and one could say that people were almost afraid to get their shoes dirty – but I love to step into that mud.

After crossing several fields, we left the forest and walked a little bit on a path were we passed a farm house and a street. As lunch time came closer I got hungry but we were also lucky enough to have the sun more and more on our side.

Then we walked along some trees and again into a forest. At one point, we met some other hikers from another tour, but I’m not sure from which route they were. Anyway, after walking together 1 km, we reached the beautiful town of Medernach. After passing some lovely streets, we finally made it to the arrival point – a small celebration area where the ORTM celebrated the beginning of the hiking season 2016.

They organized some delicious things to eat and drink, but they invited also some local producers to make their products more famous. I really enjoyed this, because I really love to buy regional products and support the small local businesses. You had several shops were you could buy different things. The butcher Wietor sold sausages, ham and everything made of meat.  The Aepplekescht offered their apple wine to try, because the actual one is only ready mid May. This one was really delicious and I am sure that I will buy this one as soon as it is ready. Finally, the Castle of Beaufort offered its traditional Cassero, which is liqueur made out of black currants. This one is still made in the Castle of Beaufort. Beside this one, they also made raspberry liqueur and also Cassero with cherry. Finally the Eppelpress sold their delicious jam. If you want to know more about all the regional products, have a look at their internet site.

Besides the shops, they offered also some things for children as for example a bouncy castle or a coach. There was even a place where the children could let their faces be painted.

So I want to thank the Office Régional du Tourisme Mullerthal for having organized this amazing seasoning opening of the Mullerthal Trail. We had a really nice day in the nature with a lovely ending in Medernach. I can only recommend it and advice people to participate in that event next year. It is absolutely worth it!

What do you think about this seasoning opening event? Did you ever hike a part of the Mullerthal Trail?
