Banff Gondola & Sulphur Mountain at Banff National Park

The Banff Gondola is a must do during your stay at Banff National Park. It will take you op to Sulphur Mountain, which is 2.292 m high. It has become such a famous place because of its spectacular view over the Town of Banff. Beside the amazing view over the Town of Banff, you’ll also see six Mountain Peaks at once. Unfortunately, the view was not that clear during our stay because of the bush fires and the smoke. If you are visiting Alberta in summer, be sure to check if there are bushfires in the surroundings.

Sulphur Mountain is also home to two hot sulphurous springs. The lower one is the Cave and Basin National Historic Site, and the higher one is the Banff Upper Hot Springs. The latter is very popular among visitors and often overcrowded! Since both attractions—the Banff Gondola and the Upper Hot Springs—are located close to each other, you can easily combine them in one visit. Either way, soaking in the steamy hot mineral water is the perfect way to relax after any activity.

The other warm spring, located at the Cave and Basin National Historic Site, was discovered by three railway workers in 1883. However, these hot springs are no longer open to the public for bathing.

You have two options to reach the top: you can either take the Banff Gondola, which will bring you up in just 8 minutes in a glass-enclosed cabin, or you can hike the entire way. The hike is a moderate 5.5 km trail. While hiking is a rewarding experience, taking the gondola definitely offers a more panoramic view over the Bow Valley and the town of Banff.

Sulphur Mountain Boardwalk & Rooftop Observation Deck

You can take a walk along the Sulphur Mountain Boardwalk, which offers impressive and stunning views in every direction. The Banff Skywalk leads you to Sanson’s Peak and the historic Meteorological Observatory. You can walk around the old building and even peek through the window. In the early 1900s, Norman Sanson climbed the trail to the observatory almost every week to record weather data—an incredible dedication!

Whenever you walk along Sulphur Mountain, you’re never truly alone on the path. Curious squirrels and marmots often accompany you along the way. And if you’re lucky, you might even spot some impressive Bighorn Mountain Sheep grazing nearby or perched on the rocky slopes!

Inside the complex, you’ll find an Interpretive Centre that explains Banff National Park in an interactive and engaging way, making it a fun and family-friendly experience. There’s even a theatre where you can see the Canadian Rockies from the perspective of a bald eagle—a truly unique view! You can easily spend just as much time exploring the Centre as you do outside on the boardwalk and observation deck.

Lunch at Sky Bistro

Whenever you’re on Sulphur Mountain, be sure to stop at the Sky Bistro. This restaurant is located right at the summit and offers an unforgettable view to accompany your meal. You can choose to dine à la carte or go for their signature Sky Experience package. All dishes feature the unique flavors of Canada, with a strong focus on regional cuisine using local meats, produce, and ingredients.

The Banff Gondola is also accessible for people with limited mobility, meaning that Sulphur Mountain is reachable even with a wheelchair. Each gondola can accommodate a wheelchair and its passenger, ensuring everyone can enjoy the stunning views from the summit.
